Actor Christopher Knight paid tribute to his former co-star Jennifer Runyon following her death on March 6, 2026, at the age of 65. Runyon played Cindy Brady in the hit 1988 CBS television movie A Very Brady Christmas alongside Knight, who played middle son Peter Brady.

Christopher Knight Honors the Legacy of Jennifer Runyon

Christopher Knight publicly remembered his former co-star Jennifer Runyon after learning about her passing. Knight portrayed middle son Peter Brady in the original sitcom The Brady Bunch from 1969 to 1974. He reunited with his television siblings in 1988 for the holiday reunion movie A Very Brady Christmas. Runyon joined the production to play the adult version of youngest daughter Cindy Brady.

Knight spoke about the experience of welcoming a new actor into an established television family. The original child actors had worked closely together for nearly two decades before the 1988 film. Joining a tight group can be difficult for any performer. Knight praised Runyon for her warm personality, quick humor, and strong work ethic. He noted that she fit into the group easily and brought genuine care to her role.

The two actors shared a career connection prior to filming the Christmas special. Both performers worked on the NBC daytime soap opera Another World during the early 1980s. Knight played the character Leigh Hobson from 1980 to 1981. Runyon played Sally Frame from 1981 to 1983.

Knight expressed deep respect for her work in the Brady franchise. He emphasized that her dedication helped make the holiday movie a massive success for millions of viewers. His tribute highlighted the lasting respect and friendship shared among actors who contributed to the long legacy of the show.

The Life and Death of Actress Jennifer Runyon

Jennifer Runyon passed away on March 6, 2026, in New York City. She was 65 years old. Her close friend and fellow actress Erin Murphy confirmed her death publicly. Murphy reported that Runyon died following a brief battle with cancer.

Runyon was born in Chicago, Illinois, on April 1, 1960. Her father was Jim Runyon, a well known radio announcer and disc jockey. Her mother was Jane Roberts, an actress. Both of her parents worked for the radio station WCFL in Chicago. She had a half brother named Scott from her father’s first marriage.

Because her father changed radio stations throughout his broadcasting career, her family moved frequently. She spent her childhood in Chicago, Cleveland, and Boston. Growing up around radio studios and theatrical sets inspired her interest in performing.

On March 9, 1991, Runyon married Todd Corman. Corman built a long career as a collegiate women’s basketball coach. He held head coaching positions at Loyola Marymount University, Albertson College, and Oregon State University. During basketball off seasons, Corman also worked in film and television production.

Through her marriage, Runyon joined a prominent film production family. Her father in law was Gene Corman, a veteran producer who co-founded New Horizon Pictures. Runyon and Corman had two children, a son named Wyatt and a daughter named Bayley.

Following the news of her passing, friends and colleagues shared tributes celebrating her life and career. Erin Murphy recalled her positive energy, her love for life, and her devotion to her husband and children.

Jennifer Runyon Role as Cindy Brady in A Very Brady Christmas

The television film A Very Brady Christmas premiered on CBS on December 18, 1988. The film was written by Sherwood Schwartz and Lloyd J. Schwartz, and it was directed by Peter Baldwin. The project gathered the main cast members of the original sitcom fourteen years after the show ended.

Susan Olsen originally played Cindy Brady in the original series from 1969 to 1974. Olsen could not appear in the 1988 reunion movie because she was away on her honeymoon with her husband Steve Ventimiglia. Producers searched for an actress who could fill the role for the holiday project. They selected Jennifer Runyon.

In the storyline, Cindy Brady is a college undergraduate. She faces mounting pressure from her parents, Mike and Carol Brady, who want the entire family together for Christmas. Cindy lies to her parents about her plans because she wants to go on a ski trip to Aspen with her college roommates. Her storyline explores her desire for independence as a young adult.

Runyon received strong praise from viewers and critics for her performance. She brought maturity and charm to the role while preserving the spirit of the character. Susan Olsen later spoke warmly about Runyon taking over the role, giving her the playful nickname “Christmas Cindy”.

A Very Brady Christmas was a major success for CBS. It became the second highest rated television film of 1988. Over 25 million households tuned in to watch the broadcast. The success of the movie proved that audiences still loved the Brady family.

Early Acting Career and Breakthrough Roles

Jennifer Runyon started her professional acting career in 1980. Her feature film debut was the slasher film To All a Goodnight (1980), directed by David Hess. She played the lead role of Nancy, a student hunted by a killer in a Santa Claus costume. The film became a popular cult title among fans of early 1980s horror movies.

In March 1981, Runyon moved into daytime drama. She was cast as Sally Frame on the long running NBC soap opera Another World. She filmed the show in New York City until February 1983. Her continuous work on daily television helped her develop strong acting skills and camera discipline.

The year 1984 proved to be a major turning point in Runyon’s career. She appeared in three major projects that gained national attention:

    • She played Heather Merriweather in the college comedy film Up the Creek, filmed in Bend, Oregon.
    • She played a memorable supporting role in the supernatural comedy film Ghostbusters.
    • She joined the main cast of the CBS sitcom Charles in Charge as Gwendolyn Pierce.

In Ghostbusters, Runyon played a college student receiving an extra-sensory perception test from Dr. Peter Venkman, played by Bill Murray. Venkman electroshocks a male student while praising Runyon’s character regardless of her answers. The scene became one of the most famous comedy moments of the 1980s.

In late 1984, she debuted on Charles in Charge. She played Gwendolyn Pierce during the show’s first season from 1984 to 1985. Gwendolyn was the main love interest of Charles, played by Scott Baio. She returned as a guest star during the second season in 1987.

Late Career Roles and Filmography of Jennifer Runyon

Knight continued playing Peter Brady across several decades in various spin-offs and specials:

Replacement Roles and Franchising in Television History

The recasting of Cindy Brady in A Very Brady Christmas reflects a common practice in long running television franchises. When original cast members are unavailable due to personal commitments, production companies often recast major roles to keep projects on schedule.

The Brady Bunch franchise experienced several cast changes over its multi-decade history. In 1976, Geri Reischl replaced Eve Plumb as Jan Brady in the variety series The Brady Bunch Hour. In 1990, Leah Ayres replaced Maureen McCormick as Marcia Brady in the drama series The Bradys.

Jennifer Runyon’s performance as Cindy Brady in 1988 stood out because she balanced respect for Susan Olsen’s original character with an updated, realistic portrayal of a 1980s college student. Her chemistry with Christopher Knight, Barry Williams, Maureen McCormick, Eve Plumb, and Mike Lookinland allowed the film to maintain its emotional believable family dynamic.

Her contribution ensured that A Very Brady Christmas could proceed as planned, giving CBS one of its biggest holiday hits. Decades after its release, the film remains a staple of holiday television schedules. Christopher Knight’s tribute honoring Runyon underlines the appreciation the original cast held for her work, preserving her legacy as a beloved member of the Brady family story.
